Robert Horvitz est né aux États-Unis en 1947.
Il a étudié l’art à l’Université de Yale (BA, 1969). Il a exposé en solo ses dessins à l’Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston, Massachusetts, 1972), l’Akron Art Institute (Akron, Ohio, 1972 et 1979), la Galerie Nexus (Atlanta, Géorgie, 1985) et une grande rétrospective au Hall d’exposition Manes (Prague, 1999).

Horvitz a enseigné des cours d’art liés à Yale, l’Institut de technologie du Massachusetts (École d’architecture), au Massachusetts College of Art, et le Rhode Island School of Design.
Il enseigne actuellement à l’Université de New York / Prague.

Since 1970, all of my drawings have been made with just one kind of mark.
I put the pen on the paper and flick it.
The split-second acceleration of the penpoint attenuates the flow of ink
so that the mark tapers, then breaks into tiny skips, and then disappears completely.
This leaves a straight comet-shaped track about 1-2 cm long.
No two marks are exactly the same, but their diversity is strictly limited.
Most of my drawings contain thousands of marks.
